Aims and Goals

Senescent cells not only undergo permanent growth arrest but also exhibit a phenotype characterized by excessive secretion of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines (SASP), which has been suggested to contribute to aging-related diseases such as cancer and chronic inflammatory diseases. This unit aims to elucidate the dynamics and characteristics of senescent cells and develop treatments for age-related diseases through the following studies: 1) elucidation of the mechanism of pathogenic progression due to p16Ink4a-positive senescent cells in age-related diseases, 2) characterization of p16Ink4a-positive senescent cells in acute organ injury, 3) elucidation of the molecular mechanisms of senescent cell rejuvenation.
