CURE Program Joint Research for “Extending Healthy Lifespan”

(Deadline: May 7, 2025)

【Coalition of Universities for Research Excellence (CURE) Program】

In 2023, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) issued a call for proposals for the “MEXT Promotion of Development of a Joint Usage/Research System Project: Coalition of Universities for Research Excellence Program (CURE).” This initiative aims for the Inter-University Research Institutes and the Joint Usage/Research Centers at national, public, and private universities to formulate plans for establishing “new systems (hubs)” to collaborate with research institutions and researcher communities beyond their traditional networks and promote the realization of initiatives, including expansion into new research fields based on these plans, fostering the next generation of researchers, and creating new industry collaborations. As a result, eight research programs were selected.

【Our Program】

 <Title>

Establishing a collaborative intelligence platform for “Extending Healthy Lifespan

 <Concept>

The institutes with outstanding achievements in research on “cancer,” “aging,” “inflammation,” and “metabolism” will unite to form a network to develop new interdisciplinary fields for extending healthy lifespan by expanding flexible collaboration and cooperation at the organizational level beyond joint research among researchers. The program will activate joint usage/research activities and pioneer the interdisciplinary “Healthy Lifespan Science” field by forming a “hub” where researchers from various fields in Japan and overseas can participate, transcending the boundaries of the research fields and research communities traditionally covered by each research institution. Additionally, the goal is to contribute to forming a healthy society by connecting academic research findings to social implementation.

Research themes for joint research

In principle, research projects should focus on interdisciplinary fields that encompass multiple areas such as “cancer,” “aging,” “inflammation,” and “metabolism.” We particularly encourage joint research projects with one of the following focuses:

● Discovering academic seeds related to “Extending Healthy Lifespan” through the initiation of hub-forming joint research projects at a developmental and evolutionary stage.

● Aiming to establish interdisciplinary networks, such as integrated research on the “Extending Healthy Lifespan” encompassing both the humanities and sciences, as well as the establishment of consortia in novel combined research fields.

※ Please refer to the slide .

Eligible applicants

● The following individuals are eligible to apply as Principal Investigators:

1) Researcher affiliated with the Cancer Research Institute (CRI), Kanazawa University

2) Researcher and faculty affiliated with Kanazawa University

3) Researcher and faculty affiliated with universities or public research institutions apart from Kanazawa University

※ For cases 2) and 3), it is required to include a researcher from CRI as a Co-Investigator.

● Each Principal Investigator may submit only one application.

● The duration of a continuous project led by the same Principal Investigator is, in principle, limited to three years.

● Co-investigators include researchers from external institutions, not just those from the institution to which the principal investigator belongs.

● Postdoctoral researchers may serve as either Principal Investigators or Co-Investigators, while graduate students may serve as Co-Investigators.

● If you wish to be matched with a researcher from CRI, please contact the office below via email.

Research period Selection date (late May) to March 31, 2026 (Tue.)
Selection and notification

● The selected projects will be determined through a review by the Joint Research Support Committee.

● The result will be notified to the Principal Investigator via email.

Expected number of selected projects 8 to 10 projects (top-down, bottom-up, interdisciplinary, hub types)
Budget 500 to 800 thousand yen per project (The committee will separately determine the amount to be allocated.)
Expense management

Expense Management: Researchers from CRI who serve as Principal Investigators or Co-Investigators will manage expenses in accordance with Kanazawa University’s regulations.

● The expense voucher entry deadline must be completed no later than February 6, 2026 (Fri.).

● The budget cannot be carried over to the following fiscal year.

Eligible Expenses: Expenses necessary for joint research (e.g., consumables, travel expenses, etc.).

● Items that cannot be covered by the subsidy, such as software licenses extending beyond the research period, are not eligible.

Application

Joint Research Application Form:   Please download it hereword.
